From Charleston we drove north along the coast to Wilmington, North Carolina and stayed at Wrightsville Beach (thanks to our friend, Rachel Andras for telling us about this). The beach is a long and very very narrow strip of land, just East of Wilmington. It’s a great beach and very popular. We had fun swimming here (warm water!) though the weather was overcast and a bit sprinkly.
We made a significant itinerary change here because of weather and time. We were supposed to go to Cape Hatteras but it would have taken at least 12 hours and probably more, judging by the slow coastal travel the day before. Also the weather was not so great for being on the beach. If I have the chance to go to the Cape again someday, I’ll plan many more days.
So we headed north to Petersburg, a journey that took about six hours, through beautiful country and many small towns.
In answer to a question, Susan is the writer of all but one entry for this blog (Sarah was the author of Santa Fe). I have tried to encourage others to write but there just isn't time. This is quite the dizzying pace for a trip! I guess most of you knew that from looking at the itinerary but I had to experience it to really understand it. Amazingly enough, none of us are minding this pace and we are having a great time.
